教學目標

Outline and object of course:
The nature of perception lies is a core concern in the philosophy of mind. It is directly related to how and whether the external world can be revealed to us, and is hence a central issue also in metaphysics and epistemology. The treatment of this topic has in recent years been heavily influenced by the development in related scientific disciplines such as vision science, cognitive psychology, cognitive neuroscience, etc. A philosophical inquiry of how and whether our faculties of perception give us access to features of the external world cannot be taken seriously in a contemporary context if research results in these fields are not taken into considerations. In light of this, this seminar will focus on closely reading some of the most updated and influential philosophical works in which empirical studies play a crucial role. Main readings include Origins of Objectivity (2010) by Tylor Burge and Out of Our Heads (2009) and Action in Perception (2004), both by Alva Noe, and some other selected journal papers.
