教學目標

Many branches of modern philosophy, like metaphysics, philosphy of mind or philosophy of science stand on the shoulders of previous philosophers of the Western world. The history of Western philosophy comprises about 2500 years and is rich in deep thoughts and original questions that deal with matters of perennial importance. Rather than dismissing history of philosophy as something merely introductory and suitable only for beginners, the aspiring philosopher should carefully study previous thinkers and acknowledge their relevance.
Our course will attempt to provide an overview of the most important philosophers and their thoughts, from antiquity through the medieval period to modern times. Due to the limited time of a single semester, much will have to be left open. However, interest in and appreciation of previous philosophical work will be fostered, and attention will be drawn towards a widened view of philosophical issues beyond what is temporarily fashionable.
Classroom time will be divided between a lecture about basics in philosophy throughout history as well as the works of representative authors and reading of historic texts in translation. Discussion of relevant issues will be an essential part of our class time. Regular appearance, active participation and thorough preparation of classes are required.
This course is suited for students both on a master and doctoral level without specialized knowledge. After the course, participants should have essential knowledge about the main issues during the history of philosophy of science and should be able to pursue independent studies of previous authors.
