教學目標

Western philosophy famously began 2500 years ago in ancient Greece, which
left its mark clearly visible until the Middle Ages. With the dawn of modernity,
philosophy became truly European. While original ancient writings were
rediscovered, a new, individualistic and scientific spirit set in. Philosophers from
Descartes to Derrida became vastly influential to European thinking. We will study
the works of these philosophers in overview, with an emphasis on Continental
Philosophy rather than Analytical Philosophy.
Classroom time will be divided between lectures and group work. No previous
knowledge of philosophy is necessary. However, regular appearance and active
participation are required.
This course is well suited for non-specialists with an interest in European culture
and thinking. After the course, participants should have some solid basic knowledge
about European philosophical thinking of the modern period from the 17th century
until recently and its cultural background.
