Scheme of Biophotonics

The key planning of the courses in the Institute of Biophotonics, as the institute's name inferred, is to train students to become interdisciplinary experts. Since the Institute is established as a graduate institute of applied sciences, we are engaged in applying the photonic technology to biomedical research. Our goals are to provide new optical methods for diagnosis, to inspect and analyze biological phenomenons more deeply, and to develop biomedical tools and biophotonic instruments for medical treatment and therapy.
Since the students are from different majors in their undergraduate education, some of them may not have sufficient biomedical knowledge (pure science and engineering background), and some of them may not be familiar with photonics technology (pure biomedical background). In order to get our students into the wonderland of biophotonics as soon as possible, we offer an introductory course "Introduction to Biophotonics" for all students. In this course, students will learn all the important subjects and research in biophotonics & biomedical optics, so that they can quickly understand the basic principles and the world trend in this rapidly developing field.

For physics & engineering background students without too much biomedical knowledge, there are some basic courses, for example, General Biology, Cell Physiology, Biochemistry, Molecular Cell Biology … etc. These courses provide students essential knowledge in biological sciences. For biomedical background students without physics & engineering basics, there are also some courses, for example, Applied Mathematics, Applied Electronics & Laboratory, Basic Opto-electronic Material and Devices, ... etc. These courses help them establish the basic engineering knowledge for their future research.
The first year Master courses was mainly basic optical science & photonics, e.g., Geometrical Optics & Physiological Optics, Introduction to Opto-electronic Engineering, Laser principle & applications. In addition, we offer Applied Quantum Mechanics as the main prerequisite for Nonlinear Optics and Laser Spectroscopy. Beside the above courses, there are a lot of central biophotonics courses, e.g., Microscopy, Opto-electronic Material & Devices, Light Propagation in Tissue, Photodynamic Therapy, Biophotonic Instrument System, Ultrasound Imaging,...etc. Since NYMU is well known for its biomedical research, our students were encouraged to take some relevant biomedical courses from other departments and institutes, for example, Structure Biology, Bioinformatics, Molecular Cell Biology, and Biochemistry … etc., There are also some programs in Structure Biology, Bioinformatics offered together with other schools.
The second year course scheduled for Master students is focused on the applications of optical science to biomedical fields. For example, Fourier Optics, Advanced Microscopy, OCT principle & applications, Laser Spectroscopy. There are some off-campus visiting activities for students to know more about biomedical companies & photonics industry, research institutes, and hospitals. With these well-scheduled courses, students could deepen and broaden their knowledge in biophotonics and biomedical optics.
