National Yang-Ming University
  President, Dr. Yan-Hwa Wu Lee

Dr. Lee Wu is a professor of the Institute of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the National Yang-Ming University, Taiwan, where she has served since her appointment in 1979. She received her doctorate in Biochemistry at the University of Tennessee in 1976 and undertook two different postdoctoral positions. She subsequently began her faculty career in Yang-Ming and was promoted to a full Professor in 1985.

In the past 26 years, Dr. Lee Wu has been directing many graduate students in a series of studies on gene expression and the mechanism of protein secretion in Streptomyces, as well as in the area of human hepatitis B, C, and D virus. Her preeminent and pioneering research results are published in presitigous biochemistry, molecular biology, and molecular virology journals around the world. Her studies in the regulatory elements of Streptomyces melanin gene lead to insights on how the activity and secretion of tyrosinase is regulated by its activating factor MelC1, and how metalloenzyme binds to metal ions. These results have been recognized by international scientists. She was invited to write review articles in “Advanced in Inorganic Biochemistry” (volume 11, 1996). Her studies on the activation and secretion of Streptomyces metelloprotease Npr leads to the invitation as a journal reviewer for Molecular Microbiology, reviewing commentary articles on propeptide and protein structure folding. In molecular virology area, in addition to earlier work on local HBV gene cloning and expression, Dr. Lee Wu holds important discoveries in HCV molecular biology. She is the first one in the world to present key information towards the understanding of the function of HCV core protein on suppression of hepatitis B virus replication and the molecular mechanism of viral pathogenesis.

In addition to her research, Dr. Lee Wu has dedicated to the university administration for over 20 years. She was appointed Chairperson, Dean of Academic Affair, and Acting President, and has been serving as the President of the National Yang-Ming University for more than 4 years. Her outstanding leadership has guided the University to establish a complete educational system and to achieve the excellence in biomedical research with international recognition. Through her endeavor, the University has become one of the leading universities in Taiwan known for excellence in both education and research. However, her endeavor is not limited within the University. In recent years, she has enthusiastically offered her vision in promoting research and development of biomedical sciences in Taiwan. Indeed, she has delivered new ideas and innovation to these emerging fields and has enriched the progress of biomedical sciences in Taiwan.

Dr. Lee Wu was elected to become an academician of Academia Sinica at Taiwan in 2000, a prestige position for her scientific achievement. She is also a member of the Committee on Science Education at the Academia Sinica and Section Chair for Infectious Disease in National Research Program for Genomic Medicine. She has been serving as the President of the Chinese Society for Cellular and Molecular Biology at Taiwan since 2005. She also serves as editor or reviewer of several scientific journals including Cell Research, Molecular Microbiology, Journal of Virology, Virology, Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, and as the scientific advisory committee for many government organizations. It is sure that her commitment to biomedical sciences, the University and the community will be even more integral in the years ahead.
