For members and future participants:

Hi, In the light of several events happened before and recently, I think I need to write this email to clear the air.

As you know, I am quite English-culture influenced. In other words, I respect all of you as grownups and independent researchers. I like to advise you to plan, manage, and finish in time your research, but you are still in charge. My job is to make sure your theses full of thinking and quality, not just some meaningless words. I feel a research without quality is a waste of life, both yours and mine and I hate wasting time. I never treat you as my research assistants; you are the researcher yourselves. You decide what you want to do and when you do it; I tell you what consequence would be, what important things should be considered, and try to provide research resources for you. When you cannot find a good solution, I suggest possible directions based on my best knowledge. You do the research and I assist. But, remember I am not your research assistant, i.e. don't expect me to review articles for you, read manuals, write computer programs, make circuits, proofread your thesis, etc., which a research student should do by their own. So, please help me to help you, i.e. do the research stuff with your best effort first, if still stuck, then I am very willing to help. And, most importantly, don't rush me to read your thesis draft. I need time to read your writings carefully and I think you need more time amend it. It is normal that four or five major revisions of a thesis are required before submitting for the oral examination, which should take several months. A student without good thesis will not graduate in my lab any more. So, be warned and please plan ahead.

By the way, as an English habit, I will never phone your home and except emergency I will not call you outside office hours (especially, at night). Otherwise, it is regarded as an impolite behavior. Although I do think about research 24 hours a day, please respect my English habit and do the same to me.

?????????? ??? ????

Good luck to you research!

Yours truly,

Chung- huang Yu
