Research 

    Vascular endothelial cells play an important role in maintaining vessel integrity. Injuries or disturbance of endothelial cells contribute to pathogenesis of cardiovascular disorders including atherosclerosis. Our studies suggest that change of intracellular redox status may be the underlying mechanism that modulates signaling pathways and result in gene alternation in endothelial cells under various stimuli including hemodynamic forces. Endothelial cells under shear flow condition constantly release nitric oxide that acts as a negative regulator for endothelial responses. The consequence of interplay between reactive oxygen species and nitrogen species may determine the endothelial responses to environmental changes. Our research interests have been focusing on:

  1. Signaling mechanisms of endothelial responses to oxidative stress including hypoxia and ox-LDL.
  2. The intracellular redox status and their effects on kinase/phosphatase activation.
  3. Endothelial gene expression and regulation. 
  4. The antioxidant activities and their cardioprotective implications.
  5. The interaction of endothelial cells with smooth muscle cells and leukocytes that contribute to the vascular disorders.
